MTA outlines Second Avenue subway progress

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The need for a Second Avenue subway is well documented, but the process of building it has been bitter for some residents and business owners. Two and a half years from completion, officials tried to keep spirits up saying a major milestone has been reached: 65 percent built.

Underground, that 65 percent is undeniably impressive. Tunnels totaling 4 miles are done. No more blasting. But on the surface the milestone has cost residents, commuters, and businesses. A fruit vendor told Fox 5 he is making half what he used to make.

Elected officials said there is cause to celebrate the first phase moving along well. They held a press conference as a reminder that a heavy push will be needed to raise more money to bring the line down to Lower Manhattan. That will require billions more and patience.

When this crucial first phase is finished, it will go down to only 63rd Street. The next two phases will be to bring it down to Hanover Square. That will take more time, possibly more than a decade or two.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
