Man mocked on social media honored for his courage

DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - Jahmel Binion did not let teasing on social media bring him down, and Friday night he was honored for his courage and rewarded for his positive outlook on life.

Binion has the rare disorder ectodermal dysplasia, a condition characterized by a reduced ability to sweat, missing teeth and abnormal hair growth.

Binion posted a selfie on Instagram, which was quickly picked up and mocked by celebrities. They have since apologized to him.

Binion was then inspired to start an anti-bullying campaign on Facebook called 'Hug Don't Judge.'

He had a chance to share his anti-bullying message and to raise awareness about ectodermal dysplasia at a boxing match in Dearborn.

Boxing promoter and manager Jackie Kallen and fight promoter Amer Jaafer invited him to sit ring-side and enjoy the fight.

"I saw this kid and I thought, he's had to fight his whole life," says Kallen. "We wanted him to have a good time and feel like the champion he is."

Binion arrived in style in a pink stretch limousine touting a 'Hug Don't Judge' T-shirt.

"If you're different, you [don't] have to hide yourself from still having fun. You [don't] have to keep yourself away from people. You can bring yourself to anywhere, and that's what I do. I don't let that stop me from doing nothing. I like boxing so I'm going to go watch boxing if I get invited to it," he says.
