It is National Devil's Food Cake Day! Why not celebrate by making your own cake or cookie?
Effie with Effie's Culinary Delights joined Good Day Orlando with some devil's food cake trivia and sweets of her own. She said the cake was invented in the early 1900's to rival the light, fluffy, white angel food cake. It is traditionally a moist, chocolate cake with chocolate icing. What makes it different from other chocolate cakes is the boiling water added to the cocoa.
Effie's Recipe 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter 3/4 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder 1/2 cup boiling water 2 1/4 cups sugar 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 4 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 cups sifted cake flour (not self-rising) 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk
Cream the butter for 3-5 minutes in a standing mixer. Add sugar. Then add eggs and vanilla.
Mix flower, baking soda and salt together. Gradually add to the mixer.
Mix the boiling water into the cocoa powder until completely combined. Let cool. Then add the milk. Finally, add this chocolate mixture into the mixer.
Pour the entire mix into a pan and bake. Frost with chocolate icing.
