Flights delayed after man jumps fence onto TIA runway

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A security scare delayed flights at Tampa International Airport Monday after a man got onto an active runway.

A passenger on a Southwest plane tweeted photos of the scene when his flight was delayed.

The airport said 27-year-old Alexander Ortega jumped over a fence around 5 p.m., and walked onto the runway on the east side of the airport.

A maintenance worker saw him, and called 911.

Three minutes later, Ortega was in custody.

"The last time this happened was in 2008," said Janet Zink, a spokesperson for TIA. "Same thing, walking on the runway. We're questioning him. We're always looking at our security system to see how the breach was made."

Two flights had minor delays.

Ortega was issued a warning for trespassing and was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.
