Detroit homeowner blames city for constant sewage backup

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A Detroit woman says overgrowth covering the drains in a nearby alley is causing constant sewage backup in her home.

Janice Blue says sewage began backing up every time she bathes and does laundry about a year ago. She says she must get up around 4:30 or 5 a.m. to bathe because that's the only time the drain is clear enough.

Blue hired a pair of plumbers to come out and they told her the problem wasn't with her line, but with the city's line.

She believes the problem is with an alley behind her home that the city blocked off and stopped maintaining years ago. The vegetation grew and the drain clean out has since been buried in overgrow.

FOX 2's Randy Wimbley contacted the city of Detroit. An inspector with the Water Department was sent out to look at the problem. No word yet on his findings.

The City says the homeowners are responsible for growth in alleys, but if the blockage is on the city's sewer line that comes off this particular alley Blue will not be held responsible.
