Some parts of Brooklyn see business growth

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Bushwick in Brooklyn has traditionally been home to artists and industrial businesses, but now a tech company has set up shop here, just the latest company to bring their business to Brooklyn.

The paint is barely dry in the new offices of online video delivery company Livestream but already the employees seem right at home in their new Brooklyn digs. The company moved its headquarters here from Chelsea.

CEO and co-founder Max Haot said the move made sense not only because the space here is almost a third cheaper but because half of the employees live in the borough.

The Brooklyn appeal is being felt across industries from tech starts ups to manufacturing to filmmaking. The hit HBO show "Girls" is just one of more than a dozen TV shows that tape in the borough.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said that private sector jobs grew by 19.8 percent between 2003 and 2012; a faster rate of job growth than any other borough in the city. He made the announcement along with other elected officials at Brooklyn Brewery, one of the borough's pioneering businesses that is now the biggest exporter of craft beer in the country.

But the boom is not being felt all across Brooklyn. Many neighborhoods still have unemployment above the city average and lack resources for job growth. The borough of cool still has work to do, but that work is not stopping anytime soon.

The New York City Department of Health has issued an alert after two babies were diagnosed with neonatal herpes this month after undergoing a ritual Jewish circumcision called metzitzah b'peh.  In this type of circumcision the mohel sucks blood directly from the infant's cut penis.  The infants need to be hospitalized and treated with intravenous acyclovir.
