What is the appeal of exotic pets?

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City may soon lift the ban on keeping ferrets as pets, according to reports. That had Fox 5 asking the question: what other exotic pets do people like to own and why?

Marc Marrone is a big fan of the ferret. He co-owns the parrots of the world pet store in Rockville Centre, Long Island. He says your pet should complement your lifestyle, not complicate it. He says ferrets are perfect for New York City apartments because they make no noise, don't chew furniture, and are great with kids. Marrone sells all sorts of exotic pets: rabbits, hedgehogs, lizards and snakes.

But what's fun and cuddly about a snake? And you can't go running in the park with a lizard. So what's the appeal?

Dr. Anthony Pilny, a veterinarian at the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine Hospital on the Upper West Side, says everyone has different tastes. Plus, in New York City, apartment living is a big factor. Some exotic pets also require unique care, which some people find it interesting, he says.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
