GROUNDBREAKING: 58 apartments for homeless veterans at Ft. Snelling

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning kicked off construction of a new $17 million housing project for homeless veterans at Fort Snelling.

The new housing project will convert the historic Ft. Snelling horse stables into apartments for homeless vets. The project is expected to be completed this fall. Watch video of the groundbreaking at vine.co/v/MddvV2mLjJb

“They need a dignified place to call home,” said Paul Fate, CEO of CommonBond Communities.

HOUSING FOR HOMELESS VETS

- 5 historic structures

- 58 apartments, ranging from studios to 3-bedroom units

- Health care

- Social and support counseling and monitoring

- Academic support and job training

- Crisis management

END VETERAN HOMELESSNESS BY 2020

Advocacy groups say there are 315 homeless veterans in Minnesota. Housing Commissioner Mary Tingerthal said she wants to end veteran homelessness in the state by 2020.

Thursday’s groundbreaking comes as the Minnesota Legislature just passed $100 million toward affordable housing across the state.

WHERE THE MONEY IS COMING FROM

Funding for the $17.2 million veterans affordable housing community was raised through a public-private mix.

UnitedHealth Group is providing $9.3 through the Minnesota Equity Fund, utilizing low income housing and historic preservation tax credits

Minnesota Housing is providing $5.5 million in housing infrastructure bonds
