Carjacker lures Good Samaritan with bike injury ploy near Princeton, Minn.

Just north of Elk River, a woman stopped to help what she thought was a person in need -- but it turns out she was just being set up by a man who stole her car and her sense of security.

On her Facebook page, the victim described the ordeal as a "tough lesson" and warned others that no matter how much someone wants to trust and help another person, she'll be thinking twice before getting out of her car again.

Katie Kangas admitted that she never thought she'd be the victim of a carjacking in Sherburne County. Now, she says if she had called 911, Gage Williams never would have had the opportunity to take advantage of her concern last Wednesday in Sherburne County.

Williams is now in custody and has been charged with concocting an elaborate plan to steal a car. Charging documents explain that he lured his victim by posing as an injured cyclist.

It was nearly 11 p.m. when Kangas came upon Williams as he lay in a ditch with a bicycle on top of him. She pulled a U-turn to see if she could help. Williams told her he was bleeding, but when she approached, he leapt into the driver's seat and tried to take off.

The criminal complaint states that Kangas put up a fight and tried to stop him; however, he pushed her from the moving car and left her in the ditch alone.

Yet, as clever as his ruse may have been, he was ultimately outsmarted by his victim. Kangas called investigators after she found him on Facebook because he used his real first name.

When deputies went to Williams' rural home in Isanti County, they found him asleep on the couch with the keys to the stolen car still in his hand. Police say he eventually confessed and even admitted to stealing the bicycle he used in the ploy.
