Neighbors call for crumbling buildings to be torn down

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Those living in one neighborhood on Detroit's west side are begging the city for help to get rid of a dangerous eyesore on a busy street. They say even walking near the building is risky.

"It's cracking in half and it's going to fall. I guarantee you - at any minute, any time," says Tracy Marshall.

Those who live down the block from an abandoned building on Grand River on Detroit's west side don't need to describe their view because we can see it for ourselves.

"My grandkids and my family, they [have] to see this? It's horrible," says Marshall.

Neighbors tell FOX 2's Erika Erickson the building has been vacant for decades and that they've called police and the city in efforts to get it torn down.

"I'm tired of seeing my city fall apart and ain't nobody doing nothing about it [sic]," says Marshall.

And the larger the cracks become, the deeper their fear of walking near it. Just steps away is another building that has already started to fall. Fallen bricks and cement block the sidewalk.

Neighbors say the orange barrels and ripped caution tape has been sitting on site for more than a year.

As if the building doesn't seem dangerous enough, it is located right behind a bus stop.

"This is the the repercussion of neglect of our city," says Marshall.

The mayor's office told FOX 2 Monday night the building in question is not owned by the city, but by a man who lives in Brownstown, and is already on the demolition list. They also say much of the city's focus and funds go towards abandoned homes, not commercial buildings.

But now say the Detroit Building Authority will be out Tuesday morning working on emergency demolition orders for both buildings.
