NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The first family of New York City will soon call Gracie Mansion home. The official residence of the mayor of New York City had been the Park Slope brownstone the De Blasios have lived in for the past 14 years. On Monday and about five months after Bill de Blasio was sworn in as mayor, the family began moving their belongings into their new home.

Among the items making the nine-mile jump from Brooklyn to Manhattan is a sewing machine.  Chirlane De Blasio said she used it to create two quilts for her children, Dante and Chiara when they were children.

Chirlane De Blasio has posted messages and photos to her Tumblr page during the transition:

"Today marks a very important day for our family – the move to Gracie Mansion has begun!  Moving is bittersweet, even when excited about the destination. We’ve lived in our Park Slope home for 14 wonderful years. So many of the moments we cherish took place right here. But in the process of packing up, I realize just how much— literally and figuratively — we are bringing with us. Imagine these family heirlooms in Gracie Mansion — the People’s House. We are bringing “home” to our new home and we are so excited about this new adventure!"

Gracie Mansion which was built in 1799 had been empty for more than a decade.

De Blasio's predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, chose to remain in his Upper East Side townhouses.
