Problems persist with privately owned escalator in subway station

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

On the E train platform at 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue Wednesday morning, two escalators are busted: The privately maintained escalator in the middle of the platform and one MTA escalator at the station's east end.

For half the morning rush hour, thousands of commuters were jammed and crowded on the platform. Some were stuck in line waiting for the one escalator working at the east end. MTA workers try to make sure no one ends up shoved off the platform.

Sources say a woman's sandal got caught in the space between the moving stairs and the comb grate at the end. Comb grates, which appeared worn out, were replaced. Was this a maintenance problem?

The MTA said it did not know but noted that the MTA escalator in question has worked 95 percent of the time. That is unlike the escalator in the middle of the platform, which has been busted for a month.

The MTA said the privately maintained escalator should be replaced because it is too old. Should this be done with MTA escalators as well?

Adam Lisberg, the MTA's spokesman, said the agency is hoping the next capital funding can replace some old elevators and escalators.

The Straphangers Campaign say the MTA has actually gotten better about fixing escalators and elevators.

But anyone who was on the train platform Wednesday morning would probably agree that the busted escalators are not good enough.

The breathtaking spa is illuminated by hundreds of candles and smells of invigorating eucalyptus. For around $80 you can bathe in the tranquil blue pools for 90 minutes and find the temperature that's right for you.

From coffee shops in Brooklyn to restaurants in Manhattan, we find speakeasies standing out by blending in. When people in Bushwick want a green machine juice blend they visit Leticia Castillo's Owl Juice Pub. But first they must find the owl. "We been doing fine without a sign," Castillo says.
