An inadvertent 'selfie' has landed a Tampa man behind bars.
Deputies say Edgar Hernandez-Santos is the man seen in photos -- which the sheriff's office released Tuesday -- showing the man who allegedly swiped a cell phone from a car at a gas station.
According to the sheriff's office, the victim had gone inside a Texaco station on Causeway Boulevard in Brandon to pay for gas. When he came back out, his cell phone was gone.
Not long after, deputies say the thief tried to access the phone. But when he input three incorrect passwords, the 'Lookout' app on the phone snapped some photos and forwarded them to the victim, along with a GPS location.
Detectives say they took that information and tracked the phone down to a unit in the Bristol Bay apartment complex in Tampa. When confronted, Hernandez-Santos allegedly confessed to stealing the phone and handed the undamaged device over to investigators.
The 38-year-old was charged with burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and grand theft.
