Memorial Service Held For Katz Plane Crash Victim Marcy Dalsey

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

Hundreds turned out to mourn one of the victims of a deadly plane crash that killed several prominent area residents, including philanthropist Lewis Katz.

A two hour service of shared tears, love and laughter capsulated the amazing life of Marcy Dalsey.

Many of the speakers said Dalsey will be remembered not only for what she’s done, but what her work has laid the foundation to do.

"I want to welcome you to the house that Lewis and Marcy built,” Dalsey’s Partner Joe Salema said.

Hundreds filled the KATZ Academy's gymnasium to pay respects to the charter school's president and co-founder, Marcy Dalsey.

Dalsey's school children helped celebrate her life with a musical tribute.

But to think the KATZ Academy was Dalsey's only impact on others, wouldn't do her life justice.

"Marcy was a force of nature. She was a powerhouse. She was a powerhouse compacted in this little person and she was impressive,” Dr. Joseph Conway said.

The 59-year old died last weekend in a Bedford, Massachusetts plane crash that killed six others.

The group was returning from an education fundraiser when their plane never made it off the ground.

"Do not take anything for granted in this life. I took for granted when I received that text that my Marcy was on her way home,” Salema said.

Dalsey's children said she died pursuing her passion, helping others.

"No conversation ended without I love you and she made to let all of us know how much she cared every opportunity she had. And I think everyone here if you could maybe just try to apply that to your own lives. It would be comforting to us knowing some good was done,” Bobby Dalsey said.

The tragedy also took the life of area philanthropist Lewis Katz.

Dalsey worked closely with Katz and his son, Drew.

Her legacy will now live on, through the charter school that serves as a safe haven for the children of Camden.

"I'm going to do everything in my power that this place is going to be known as the Katz-Dalsey Academy from this day forward,” Drew Katz said.

Monsignor Doyle of Sacred Heart in Camden said a bell tolled 59 times Friday at the church to commemorate Dalsey’s life.

The bell came from a scrap heap in Camden and ended up at the top of the church, something Doyle said is fitting for the life she lived.
