Habitat For Humanity Builds Vietnam War Veteran A New Home

Posted: Updated:
Terre Haute, IN.-A Vietnam War veteran got a new home with the help of Indiana's Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Wakefield says he is grateful for their efforts. He admits veterans often don't think twice about serving their country, but are often left struggling and forgotten when they come back home.

"Every veteran has a hard time coming home, especially the veterans who are, you know, handicapped and lose arms and legs and that sort of thing. We all serve our nation because we love it and some paid the ultimate price by their lives, so it's important to think of all of them at this time,” said Wakefield. “A lot of veterans, they come back home, they don't have their jobs, and this gives a veteran a chance to get a leg up."

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that helps build affordable homes for people in need.

"Well, last year the board of the Habitat board of directors decided that they would designate our next build for a veteran's build," said Executive Director at Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity Annette Houchin. "We serve the low income families, who otherwise couldn't afford to purchase a house. We sell it to them at a zero percent interest loan at a very low, affordable price."

Funds for housing materials come from corporate donors and public donations.
