WAUKEGAN, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

A 53-year-old Waukegan man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after his wife, daughter and dog were found dead in their townhome Sunday night.

According to Waukegan police, officers went to the Continental Drive home about 6:15 p.m. after Anthony Marcus called police to tell them he had just killed his family and was going to slit his wrist.

Wearing a large white bandage wrapped around his left wrist in bond court Monday morning, Anthony Marcus told judge Raymond Collins that he had recently been laid off from his job, indicating that he could not afford an attorney, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

Collins set bond at $5 million, and a preliminary court hearing for July 2.

An emergency dispatcher received the call about 6:15 p.m. Sunday from a townhome in the 4100 block of Continental Drive, said Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip. When officers arrived, they found what is believed to be a suicide note on the front porch, Florip said.

Officers went inside and found Marcus, 53, who was immediately taken into custody and given medical attention for what were self-inflicted wounds, Florip said.

As police continued the search of the residence, they found his wife, Sun Marcus, 50, and his 17-year-old daughter, Samantha, both dead. The family dog was also found dead.

Florip said the wife and daughter had both been strangled.

Prosecutors said Marcus left a note saying, “I’m sorry, your dad is a failure at everything.”

“He was conscious and walked out of the house under his own power,” Florip said.

In the family’s neighborhood, residents were stunned by the crime.

“This is just shocking,” said Kayla Walker, 23, who lives across the street. “Their daughter was in a wheelchair. That’s why it’s so shocking.”

Police on Monday morning were still at the home, which has a handicap-accessible ramp leading up to the front door. The woman’s red van with a wheelchair lift was still in the parking lot along with the family’s grey SUV.

“They always waved hi and bye,” said Walker, adding that the family has lived there for about eight years.

Police would not specify how the woman and girl died.

“This isn’t a whodunnit,” Florip said before charges were officially filed. “We’re not looking for an offender. We’re classifying this as a domestically related.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
