Extra sleep...but still tired?

Posted: Updated:

Americans are struggling more than ever to get a good night's sleep.

So when we get extra sleep, like on the weekends, why is it we still feel tired?

Sometimes you feel just beat after 9 or 10 hours on the weekend. There's some truth to the saying "I'm tired because I got too much sleep."

Sleep doctors tell YouBeauty.com that our bodies like consistency.

We're really at our best when we can go to bed and wake up at pretty much the same time every day.

So if you normally get eight, but get nine - that will disrupt the body's rhythm.

What you may not realize is our bodies go through five sleep cycles during the night. They're each about 90 minutes long.

If you get extra sleep, experts say you'll end up in stage 3 or 4 of sleep and that can leave you exhausted for the entire day.

It also needs to be good quality sleep which we all know is easier said than done.

Especially if you have a new baby, or you're stressed from work, or perhaps you let your furry friends in to sleep in the bed.
