"Living Arts" makes music dreams come true

DETROIT (WJBK) -- It's called the "Living Arts" program and it matches local artists with students under the watch eye of professionals.

The walls of the United Sound Systems Studio have heard some of Detroit's greatest voices and now it's the place where new dreams are being made.

These 8th grade students from the Academy of the Americas are part of the “Living Arts” education program of southwest Detroit.

Local artist and musician Sterling Toles has been working with this program for two years. He says it's more than teaching music in schools.

"We also infuse the curriculum of the classes we come in on into the art that we teach them," Toles says

The kids form groups and then write and record their songs.

A few get matched with local artist and sing original music.

With the community support from groups like Harmonie Park Entertainment this program is growing, giving kids an artistic release of emotion and a place to express life that for many of these kids doesn't exist anywhere else.

"It allows them to finally be in connection with the possibilities. I think in a lot of ways because people have been disconnect from the arts, what happens ultimately is they turn to vices because they’ve never had an opportunity in a healthy way to process what they experience internally.”

At the end of the school year, the kids get a CD with their music and the memory of an experience that they will never forget.
