Special Olympics: Swimmer Alex Dmytrenko

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Alex Dmytrenko of Gurnee, a Special Olympic star in the pool, let his swimming accomplishments earn him a spot on Team Illinois.

He also has the chance to win gold at the USA games this weekend.

"21 years. He started when he was two," said Laura Dmytrenko, Alex's mother.

Alex has tried everything from golf to track, but swimming is his favorite.

"He loves the water, he will do anything we ask him too," said Alex's coach Amber Bodeme.

Alex was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and is mostly non-verbal. He only communicates by using hand gestures, and he let's his performance in the pool do the talking. His drive is unmistakable.

"If he gets anything but a gold, you can see the disappointment in his face," added Laura. "For him to show excitement, it's usually just a big smile."

On most days, Alex is wearing a big smile.

When he competes, the end result is almost always gold. In New Jersey, the goal is the same.

"We are going for the gold," Laura said.

Alex is competitive and confident, but always humble.

“He will get his medal and wear it proudly, then he will be the first one to go to his teammate and congratulate them or high five them," added Bodeme.

Alex will compete in three events this weekend when the USA games begin in New Jersey; the back stroke, freestyle and relay competition.
