CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Bond was denied Thursday for a 23-year-old man charged in the fatal shooting of Betty Howard, a South Side special education teacher at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy.

Dominique Hodrick was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Howard, 58, who was working at her part-time job at a real estate office in the 700 block of East 79th about 5:25 p.m. on May 29 when she was shot in the head, officials said.

A 58-year-old man and 23-year-old woman also were shot.

According to the police report, Hodrick and another person were shooting toward their target — a man — when they hit Howard and the two others.

Hodrick, of the 7900 block of South St. Lawrence, also faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery or discharge of a firearm, both felonies, police said. He lives less than a quarter-mile from the shooting site and was scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday.

Members of the police gang investigation unit arrested Hodrick while he was riding in a car Lansing.

In 2011, Hodrick was charged with possession of a firearm and not having a Firearms Owner ID card. The gun charge was dropped. He pleaded guilty to the FOID charge and was sentenced two years of probation, which he completed on March 4, according to court records.
