Five people injured in shootings Wednesday

At least five people were injured in city shootings Wednesday.

In the most recent shooting, a male was shot about 9:30 p.m. in the Oakland neighborhood on the South Side.

The 21-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped at a red light in the 3700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when shots were fired at the vehicle, said police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. The man was struck in the neck.

The driver of the vehicle drove the man to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, from where he was transferred to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, Greer said.

About an hour and a half earlier, a man was shot in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood.

The 20-year-old was in the 5300 block of South Calumet Avenue about 7:50 p.m. when he was shot in the arm and side, police said. He was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County and later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was not immediately known, police said.

Earlier in the afternoon, a man was shot and critically wounded in North Lawndale on the Southwest Side.

The man, 19, was in the 3500 block of West 13th Place when he was shot in the back, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 17-year-old boy was shot about an hour and a half earlier in Englewood on the South Side.

The teen was in the 7200 block of South Union Avenue about 3 p.m. when he was shot in the right shoulder, police said. He was taken in “stable” condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

The day’s first shooting happened several hours earlier in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

A 33-year-old man was driving in the 3100 block of West Warren Boulevard at 1:35 a.m. when someone fired shots at the vehicle, police said. The man was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, police said.
