NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - A New Smyrna Beach father is accused of trying to kill his son.  New Smyrna Beach Police said 45-year-old Eugene Blackwell Sr. was arrested Sunday for shooting his son, Eugene Blackwell Jr., multiple times.

They said it all stemmed from an argument that happened on Father’s Day a little after 6:30 p.m. at 607 Edward Street in New Smyrna Beach.  Detectives said Blackwell Sr. was in a domestic dispute with his wife, so his 18-year-old son intervened.

And when Blackwell Jr.’s mother left the home, police said that’s when the teen was shot by his own father.  Detectives said several neighbors called 9-1-1 after hearing the gunshots.

Some neighbors even said they saw the teen running from the home to a neighbor's house for help.  Other witnesses observed Blackwell Sr. drive away from the residence in a white Dodge pick-up truck.

Police later found the Dodge truck abandoned in the 400 block of Duss Street.  Blackwell Sr. was arrested after turning himself into police.

He was charged with attempted murder and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond allowed.  FOX 35 checked into the background of Eugene Blackwell Sr. and we found out that he was arrested back in 2011 and 2012 for domestic battery charges.
