Local Businesses and Volunteers Prep For Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Preparation continued through Sunday in anticipation of the opening ceremony of this year’s Special Olympic Games. The local New Jersey community and businesses donated their time and energy to create a huge welcome center at the Trenton Mercer Airport!

The airport was completely transformed just for the athletes competing in the Games. There were over 5,000 balloons blown up, along with hand painted murals everywhere in-site. In order to make this transformation possible, there were volunteers that worked over 4,500 volunteer hours. Even the Citation and Beechcraft airplane owners donated their planes, fuel, and pilots to fly in over 700 athletes for the Games.

The President of the New Jersey Special Olympics, Marc Edenzon, explained how important all these final details were not only for the Games itself, but for the incredible athletes competing this year.

"It's absolutely remarkable what's taking place and all the moving parts that are going on, but Mercer County Park is being constructed, all the competition venues at the colleges, our special event Olympic town is being built as we speak, they are preparing to welcome all of those athletes," he said.

There are several people lined up to be present at the Games, all of whom have played very important roles in making this event a success in the Garden State.

"Coach Kyle Flood's going to be welcoming all of our athletes, we have representative's from FOX, we have Eric LeGrand that's going to be there and then we as a team are going to go up and support Eric's charity. He has this fundraising walk and we made a contribution and our whole team will go up and help with that send off before we get on the buses and head out to the colleges," he explained.

Overall, there is a ton of excitement happening between the organizers, athletes, friends, and families in attendance. The Special Olympic Games will take place throughout the week while the local community will continue to embrace all of the athletes and families that are venturing to this region for this very special event.

The knockout game where young people randomly punch innocent bystanders to see if they can knock them unconscious has been relatively rare in New Jersey, until now. After three attacks in less than half an hour in a safe Hackensack neighborhood, some residents are concerned that this trend will pose potential problems for more New Jerseyans. Hackensack police are looking for a man caught on surveillance video who is suspected of the three separate assaults.
