ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Orlando police say some good Samaritans helped catch an accused thief.
Bill and Claudia Lefkowitz were walking through a breezeway between Pine and Church streets, when they say someone suddenly snatched Claudia's purse.
"He came at us, bent over, and had a hat with a big rim, so I couldn't see his face at that point," Claudia explained. "He grabbed my purse. It was on my shoulder, and he also grabbed a necklace. I was terrified. I kept screaming, 'No, no, no!' because my life is in my purse."
Claudia says she tried fighting back.
"I had fallen all the way back, and when I got up I had my umbrella with me and tried to hit the man with my umbrella, but I think I hit Bill."
Bill tried stopping the suspect, but he ran away. That's when two men, a security guard from another property and a nearby resident, came to the rescue.
"They went after the guy and wrestled him to the ground, at which point, he dropped my bag."
Officers say the suspect was seen running along railroad tracks taking off his clothes. He was later found hiding under an SUV with only his underwear on.
"The security guard got him by the arms and shoulders and said they would walk him to the police."
Larry Dorsey, 56, was arrested and charged with robbery and battery.
"I just got the impression he wasn't really good at this. And when I found out he was homeless, it's not that I condone what he did, but I think you can understand the desperation that someone in his position must experience."
Both Bill and Claudia say they are grateful to the men who caught the thief, as well as other strangers who stopped to help.
"Made sure we were ok. It was really comforting to experience from strangers."
