Compton, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A fire in a suspected drug lab in Compton was brought under control early today after someone who had been inside suffered severe burns, authorities said.

The fire burned at a residence in the 1200 block of West 137th Street, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Nabele Meacham. A Los Angeles County Fire Department HazMat team was sent to the location.

Meacham said sheriff's deputies and Compton firefighters believe the house may have been used as a laboratory to manufacture Phencyclidine -- PCP.

The fire was noticed by a deputy around 3:15 a.m. After he began to approach the residence, a van sped away, and deputies gave chase, according to reports from the scene. During the pursuit, a passenger jumped from the vehicle and was later discovered to be suffering severe burns.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ulysses Cruz said after dawn that an evacuation of residents was "pending, but so far, they have not decided to evacuate anybody.''

The fire was reported knocked down around 5:30 a.m.

From Bob DeCastro:

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies were in the process of going door to door to evacuate neighbors, following concerns of a drug lab inside a home in Compton. Hazmat teams were on scene trying to figure out what kind of explosive toxic chemicals inside.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at the 1200 block of 137th St. 3:30 Tues morning. Crews extinguished the fire quickly.

Witnesses saw a car leaving the scene. Deputies tried to pull over that car, but the driver did not stop. There was a pursuit and the driver got away, but the passenger bailed out. That suspect was arrested she suffered severe burns and was taken to Gardena Memorial Hospital.
