Restaurant Road Rules

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. - It's the Summertime. Time for vacationing and tons of dining on the run. Registered dietitian and nutrition adviser Carolyn O'Neil spoke with Good Day Atlanta anchor Ron Gant and gave him a couple of tips on making Summertime restaurant trips as healthy as possible.

Map Out Menu Choices

  • Check out menu choices online before you dine. Nutrition information can help you see the burger you really want has more protein and fewer calories than some of the entree salads.

Look Both Ways

  • Look around to get a visual on portion sizes. Way too large? Split the entree or plan to box up half for carryout.
  • Green veggie sides too small? Ask for a bigger portion to equal at least one cup.

Signal Your Intentions

  • Be specific about what you want or don’t want. Ask for lemon wedges or hot sauce to add pizzazz so you don’t need as much salt. Ask for your grilled fish to be lightly brushed with oil. Ask for rich sauces and salad dressings to be served on the side.

Watch Out for Road Hazards

  • Overindulging on bread or chips before the meal (dunking bread dipped into olive oil can add up to 500 calories before your entree arrives!)
  • Drowning your salad in dressing (ask for it to be lightly dressed or dressing on the side. Ask for balsamic vinegar to up flavor on salads with zero calories)
  • Downing large glasses of sugar sweetened beverages (choose cocktails with fewer calories too such as vodka and soda, light beer or dry white wine)
  • Enjoy the Ride!
  • Enjoy the conversation and atmosphere as much as the cuisine. Slow down and take in the experience!
