9-1-1 caller transferred to voicemail

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WOFL-FOX 35 News)-- A New Port Richey man whose home was broken into by four armed men called 911 and was transferred to voice mail!  The dispatcher that responded to the call tried to transfer the caller from the fire line to the police line, but the man was transferred to the wrong extension.

The next thing the victim knew, he was being asked to leave a message.  At one point on the call, you hear a woman screaming in the background as the voicemail says, "If this is an emergency, hang up and dial 911."

When he was unable to reach law enforcement, the homeowner shot one of the armed robbers.  He said he had to because the robber pistol-whipped a woman and threatened a baby.

Dispatch: "Get law enforcement on the line...you shot someone...listen to me, did you shoot somebody?"

Caller: "Yes I shot him in the [bleep]"

Dispatcher: "What's going on there?"

Caller: "Somebody just came in my house, four people just came in my house, they beat the [bleep] out of me and my wife and my stepmother and they robbed us."

Authorities say the robbers broke into the home looking for cash and prescription pills.
