Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

The record remains intact.  Backers of a Part-time legislature proposal are now officially "O for life" on trying to place this on the statewide ballot.

Organizers of the most recent effort cried uncle after failing to make a dent in the 400,000 petition signatures they needed to win the ballot slot.

But rather than toss in the towel, the lead person Norm Kammeraad tells the MIRS newsletter guys that the drive is being "suspended" with hopes of coming back in 2016.

The term is meaningless in that the names they did gather will be null and void in two years so there is nothing to suspend other than the hopes of trying again.

In the beginning Mr. Kammeraad, a likeable chap, was very upbeat about fertilizing the grass roots to get the names.  He employed a hired-gun who reportedly found volunteers in most of the state's 83 counties and when the media checked, he reported the signatures were coming in "in droves."

So how many "droves" were there when they took a powder?

He would not say.

It's a good bet that the number was so unimpressive he didn't want the public to know for fear the myth of grassroots support would evaporate.

He blames the long cold winter. It's tough to fertilize grassroots when they are covered in snow. He also concedes a miscalculation on waiting until March to collect names when he reflects the drive should have commenced in January.

Yes, cold weather may have been a factor but a bigger deterrent was the lack of some cold hard cash to sell this thing.

Such is the fate of grassroots efforts that are brimming over with enthusiasm but the bank account is shabby at best.  He confessed to having raised $18,000 which is about $2 million short of what you need to pay for names and then another $2 million to sell it to the people.

Hence the good government types in town, who never really thought he could do it in the first place, are breathing a collective sigh of relief. Mr. Kammeraad joins former candidate for governor Dick Chrysler and a host of legislators who have tried to pass this PTL and failed.

But they'll be back in two years…with the same predictable results.
