Last phase of 'Carmageddon' just hours away

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Motorists who use the Kennedy Expressway may be in for another rough ride this weekend.

The first phase of the project was completed ahead of schedule, but drivers might not have the same luck this weekend when phase two takes place. Crews say the second phase of construction will be a bit trickier than the first to complete.

The second phase of construction affects the outbound Kennedy Expressway from Grand to Ogden. Crews will be implementing full closures on the expressway to work on the Ontario Street ramp that feeds into the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers can use Lakeshore Drive, The Dan Ryan, Western Avenue or public transportation.

When using the Dan Ryan, drivers can exit at 35th Street, use Ashland Avenue and then get back on the Kennedy from there. The outbound entrance ramp from Jackson to Randolph will be closed.

The CTA and Metra announced they will expand their service over the weekend to help locals get around the construction area.

If the crews do not complete the project by 5 a.m. Monday, they will need to pay a fine of $20,000 for every 15 minutes past 5 a.m. Officials say they do not expect that to happen.
