WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic mayoral nominee in the nation's capital says she's not going to persuade voters to support her by debating her opponents.

Instead, Muriel Bowser told The Associated Press on Friday that people support her because she's engaging with them one-on-one and talking about her vision for the District of Columbia. She says she's spent the past two months reaching out to those who voted for others in the April primary, in which she defeated incumbent Vincent Gray.

Three out of four voters in the city are Democrats, making Bowser the favorite to win in November.

She faces fellow D.C. Councilmember David Catania and former Councilmember Carol Schwartz in the general election. Both are independents.

Catania has criticized Bowser for refusing to debate him until he qualifies for the ballot.
