Another Montgomery County Bridge Closure To Cause Traffic Issues

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. -

Friday night already means rush hour gridlock, but it's about to get worst for commuters in Montgomery County.

Yet another bridge is closed after failing inspection.

It connects Graterford Road to Perkiomen and Skippack townships.

It closed Thursday evening.

Friday was the first full day since the Graterford Road Bridge over the Perkiomen creek has been shut down and John Scioli, a local business owner, is worried that it's already impacting business.

"It's affecting our pockets. I mean it's a Friday here. Around 1:00 p.m. Usually we have every seat filled in here and now it's non-existent," explains Scioli.

The 60-year-old bridge connects drivers with Gravel Pike and Perkiomen Creek Road.

Officials shut it down last night after they say it failed an inspection.

"You're looking at a large spell area with the rebars showing. You see severe rusting of the rebars," said Les Toaso of PennDot while pointing to cracks and exposed beams also making it structurally unsafe.

Another issue is a large hole that Toaso says is two feet deep.

We'll probably end up replacing the whole bridge. Right now there's no time table. I can't give you a definite time in when it will be replaced," said Toaso.

With no definite timetable ahead and with the Arcola Road Bridge also shut down, drivers are bracing for more congestion getting around in Schwenksville and Collegeville.

Officials say the price range for a total bridge replacement is could be $8-$12 million.
