'Las Bicicletas' art exhibit promotes 'clean living'

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The artist behind the latest public art installation around New York City wants to reduce carbon emissions one bicycle ride at a time.

“The message is very simple. We have to do something about the environment and carbon emissions. One of the very small parts that we can do is ride our bicycles every now and then. My father says it takes little steps to get very far," said Juan Aceves, son of Mexican artist Gilberto Aceves Navarro.

The 82-year-old named the installation, "Las Bicicletas" or "The Bicycles."

A total of 122 "bicicletas" are going up in the Big Apple. They weigh approximately 1,200 lbs. each and are laser cut from a large sheet of steel.

The first bicycles went up early Tuesday near Jay St. under the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn.

More will be up by Wednesday throughout Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan. The 10 locations include:

1. Bowery at Canal - 12 sculptures

2. Manhattan Bridge Brooklyn - 12

3. Jay St. and Sands St. - 12

4. Pearl St. btwn Front St. and York St. - 12

5. Cadman Plaza West - 10

6. Columbia Heights seating area - 12

7. Atlantic Ave. at Columbia St. -30

8. BAM Park at Lafayette Ave. - 5

9. Bartel Pritchard Sq. - 12

10. Louis Valentino Jr. Park - 5

Sending a message about social and political issues through art is nothing new for Aceves Navarro.

" In 1973, he created a mural in Japan that took on the oil crisis. In 1968, he was involved with the Olympic games and the massacre in Mexico," said Aceves.
