Deck Safety Important During Summer Months

Posted: Updated:

In May, nearly a dozen people went to the hospital after a deck collapsed during a party at a Stone Mountain home.

With summer in full swing many people will likely be spending time on their deck so we caught up with a local contractor to get what you need to know when it comes to deck safety.

Peter Michelson is the CEO of Renewal Design Build. He says a majority of decks are made of pressure treated lumber and some of the early obvious signs of trouble are rotting boards, protruding nails and shaky rails.

But, there are other things you should look for, too- including the spacing of the spindles. They should be four inches apart- no more.

Also, look for how the footing for the support beams is poured and- how the deck attaches the home. New standards require the bolt go all the way thru to the frame of the home -- not just thru a brick veneer.

If your deck is in really bad shape, you may want to consider demolishing it and starting over. If you do, Michelson says get a licensed contractor and make sure he pulls a permit for the work.

It may be costly. The average deck could run around 20 to 25 thousand dollars.

Yearly maintenance such as staining it every year will certainly make it last longer.

Michelson says there are also many other options when it comes to material- including weather resistant woods and composites that require little to no maintenance.

They will cost more- but in the end, Michelson says the cost may be forth it.

It really depends on your budget.
