How the sale of synthetic drugs in Michigan is still happening

(WJBK) -  Today marks two years since a state ban against synthetic marijuana went into effect. Now there's a dangerous new drug hitting some store shelves.

"People had a false sense of security. They seen [sic] the legislation and they thought, well, it would be off the shelves, and it's far from off the shelves. You can go into pretty much any gas station and party store and buy synthetic drugs," says Bill Miskokomon.

You may have thought it was over but Michigan's war on K2 is just getting started.

In 2012 Gov. Snyder signed a package of bills banning the sale of synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 or spice, and is the drug linked to several tragedies, bizarre zombie-like attacks and even deaths.

"The drugs turn my son into a different kid. He was a totally different kid. It wasn't the son that I once knew," Miskokomon says.

He runs Ban Michigan K2, the community activist group largely responsible for getting Michigan's legislation passed. But many say it doesn't go far enough.

"Everybody threw their hands up and said they did their job and they pretty much walked away from it. The problem still exists. They're not really getting involved with it because they felt that they'd done their job," says Miskokomon.

Under the state's current law, synthetic marijuana with the chemical makeup of K2 and spice are illegal, but manufacturers can change the name and a few key ingredients, label it 'Not for Human Consumption' and continue to profit off the highly-addictive drug now called cloud 9, ivory wave or zoom.

"Once the test is done, then what they'll do is determine if it is a banned substance or not and if it's not a banned substance you have to start the whole process. You have to go to the Department of Community Health and they have to start the process of getting it banned," says Miskokomon.

Michigan is now among more than 40 states to enact the synthetic marijuana ban, but it is up to parents to find out what their kids are doing.
