NYPD's beach reminder: no alcohol

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's hot outside, it's happy hour, and we're at a city beach where you can legally have an adult beverage -- but only on the boardwalk.

Drinking alcohol on New York City beaches is against the law. If you get caught by parks enforcement or police officers, you could get written up with a violation.

The NYPD told Fox 5 that officers patrol the beaches to make sure everyone is safe, as they do every beach season. If they see someone openly drinking alcohol, they may issue a violation. Contrary to a published report, cops do not randomly search bags and coolers, the NYPD said.

Attorney James Kousouros told Fox 5 that cops would need probable cause to search your coolers or bags.

The Parks Department reminds beach-goers that alcohol consumption is permitted at boardwalk vendors but not on the beaches.
