Self-service passport kiosks debut at Newark Liberty Airport

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Automated passport control kiosks aimed at reducing the stress of customs processing have launched at Newark Liberty International Airport.

"This technology allows our customers to have shorter connect times, and that allows them to meet their commitments, to meet their connecting flights," said Don Wright of United Airlines.

While at the kiosk, travelers follow the on-screen instructions to scan their passport, take a photo, and answer a few customs declaration questions by touchscreen. Law enforcement background checks are also being done simultaneously.

Travelers then get a receipt to be taken to a Customs and Border Protection officer, who will verify the purpose and intent of their travel.

"The self-service kiosk removes, essentially the administrative responsibility from the officer allowing for more efficient and more effective processing times," said Robert Perez of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

CBP officials said they've seen upwards of 20 percent to 45 percent decrease in international waiting times for customers.
