It’s the countdown to the 4th of July.  Folks from North Carolina are making the mad dash to South Carolina in droves, with hopes of scooping up fireworks for the holiday.  The only problem is most fireworks – like fire crackers – are illegal in North Carolina.  That is not stopping shoppers from taking the risk.

Gastonia Fire Inspector, Chris Stowe wants to remind North Carolina residents that fireworks can be dangerous.

“No, it's not safe at all.  It can be classified as fun, but not safe.  Our slogan this year is leave it to the pros.”

Jeff Westmoreland says fireworks are a family tradition, but he keeps safety first.   “We make sure we have plenty of rain before we set off fireworks.  No kids are lighting fireworks. Adults only.”

The House of Fireworks in Fort Mill emphasizes safety, too.  The shop hands out safety tips to consumers.  It’s important to be aware of the statistics.  Chris Stowe adds these startling statistics:  “We have twice as many house fires on the 4th of July than any other day.  2/5 of those are caused by fireworks.”

Here are some tips from the Gastonia Fire Department to keep you safe:

Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks.

Fireworks should only be used outdoors.

Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
