Connecticut Man Accused Of Leaving Infant Inside 130 Degree Car

New London, CT -

A father in Connecticut is facing charges after, police say, he allegedly left his 6-month-old infant in a sweltering car that reached up to 130 degrees while he went shopping.

Brian Pavao,33, wasn't around his house to talk Tuesday night, but he'll have to answer to a charge of risk of injury to a minor soon.

The Groton man is accused of leaving an infant alone in an unlocked car in a New London Shoprite parking lot with three windows up and the fourth just open a crack.

Reports say Pavao told police he forgot the baby was in the car, because he was texting on his phone as he got out to go into the store. Someone spotted the child in the car and called police.

"It’s amazing that the baby is still alive and I'm so happy that it is alive," said Dr. Kelly Johnson-Arbor of Hartford Hospital.

On the sweltering summer day, toxicology expert Kelly Johnson-Arbor, says the problem wasn't just his decision to go shopping without the child.

"Children are more susceptible than adults to heat injury. their bodies are smaller, they can't dissipate heat as well as adults can and when you leave a child or even a pet in the car, the temperature in the car rises a lot in the first few minutes," she said.

In fact, investigators estimate that the car boiled up to 130 degrees.

They also believed Pavao left the 6-month-old in there for 30 minutes or more.

Police said the infant was alive and breathing, which surprised even a seasoned doctor.

Many shoppers were outraged over the incident.

Many questioned what Pavao was thinking and some said that the 33-year-old has no excuse.
