Closed intersection on US 30 in NW Indiana reopens after closure for repairs

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Though authorities originally planned to close a stretch of U.S. 30 in Indiana for storm-related repairs Wednesday night through Thursday morning, repairs were completed sooner than expected.

Authorities diverted traffic in both directions off U.S. 30 between I-65 and U.S. 41 about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Cpl Mike Jones said. The closure was intended to allow for

emergency power line and traffic light repairs after severe storms early this week.

Lanes were not scheduled to reopen until 10 a.m. Thursday while NIPSCO repaired downed power lines and INDOT crews worked to fix traffic signals overnight, Jones said. However, NIPSCO completed work “much faster than expected” and U.S. 30 reopened about 12 a.m. Thursday, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Northwest district.

The only closure on U.S. 30 overnight was at Taft Street in Merrillville, which reopened and had opened all lanes as of 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to INDOT. The intersection remained a 4-way stop due to wiring issues, and drivers were cautioned about delays.
