One simple 4th of July request from combat veteran with PTSD

Posted: Updated:

Jon Dykes is a combat veteran with 10 years of service in the U.S. Army. He’s also one of thousands of American veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

After struggling with PTSD symptoms that lasted for hours during last year’s 4th of July fireworks, Dykes made a sign to let his neighbors in Georgia know he’s a combat veteran, requesting them to “please be courteous with fireworks.”

'Constantly reminded' of war

Dykes served in the Army from January 2000 until October 2010, when he was medically discharged for physical injuries and PTSD. During his service, he received a Combat Action Badge and the Bronze Star

“Always surrounded and always outnumbered. I lost my very best friend in 2005 and several other great soldiers over my deployments,” Dykes said. “No exaggeration or lie. IED, small arms ambushes, and mortar/rocket attacks were a daily occurrence. Never saw a Subway, Burger King, or MWR show on my deployments. We were fighting a war and were constantly reminded of that.”

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
