Troops Take Their Oath To Become Citizens Of the United States

Posted: Updated:

San Diego, Calif.-More than 50 U.S. troops took their oath Wednesday to become citizens of the country they are fighting for.

Sgt. Jorge Hernandez Rivas will never forget that 2004 battle in Fallujahsot.

"We left nothing but great men out there, and it was a day I will never forget,” he said.

The two time Purple Heart recipient will also remember this day.

"It's overwhelming it's a little bit of a humbling experience,” said Sgt. Jorge Hernandez Rivas.

Rivas along with 50 other service members became United States citizens aboard the USS Midway Museum.

Sgt. Hernandez Rivas joined the Marine Corps because of 9/11.

"I didn't come in to earn citizenship, I came in because of what it means to be an American what it means to stand here and sleeping a blanket of freedom that many men before us have passed away for,” he said.

Navy Hospital Corpsman Xavier Thompson was also humbled.

"Makes me feel proud because when you're not born here it is a bit of a process to get here, but you got to stay persistent. You gotta move the bumps out of the road, you gotta keep it trucking, you gotta keep it moving,” he said.

The new citizens representing 46 countries couldn’t be more proud.

Happy their hands are now holding proof of what their hearts have long felt that America is home.
