Beachgoers Ready For Calmer Waters After Soggy July 4th

Posted: Updated:

Friday was not the greatest beach day. Some people braved it and contended with rain and wind in the morning and the rough surf all day.

Still, the shore is a popular spot over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.

And FOX 29's Sabina Kuriakose reported live Friday night from Ocean City. Earlier in the evening, the surf was definitely up, but things seemed to be calming down later.

Beach patrols were keeping a wary eye on the shoreline as Hurricane Arnold churned up the Atlantic Ocean. They know the resulting rip tides can snag even the most experienced swimmers.

Thought the rough waters and rip currents just beyond those breakers stopped swimmers short of going in, it wasn't a total wipe out.

The waves were great for surfers who took advantage of the unsettled sea.

And, despite the conditions, vacationers poured into the Jersey Shore this weekend in great spirits, buoyed by the promise of calmer waters ahead.
