GILBERT, Ariz. - It's a tragic ending to a two week search for a valley dog.

Valor's owners had worked around the clock to find him, after he went missing from the Green Acre boarding facility in Gilbert where 20 dogs were found dead.

The beloved pet was found dead Saturday morning by the side of the road, not far from the boarding facility, after apparently being hit by a car.

"We know for a fact now and unfortunately he's not going to be coming home the way we wanted," said Zack Wicker, Valor's owner.

A bicyclists found the two-year-old German Shepherd mix near Lindsay Road and the loop 202, just three and half miles from where he took off. His microchip implant ultimately identified him.

"We had so much hope, we had so many prayers, we had vigils. It's one of the most heartbreaking things we've ever been through," said Heather Wicker.

The Wicker family left their two dogs, Valor and Remmington at the Green Acre boarding facility two weeks ago. The black lab-- Remmington-- was among the 20 dogs found dead there from apparent heat exhaustion. The facilities owners said Valor ran away.

"Valor means to be courageous especially in battle, to put up a good fight and I'd like to think he did,” said Zack Wicker. "He got away and he made it this far and he was trying to get home.”

Maricopa County Sheriffs deputies are investigating nearly two dozen dog deaths related to the Green Acre facility.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, at a press conference today, wouldn't say why his office has still has not obtained a search warrant. No criminal charges have been filed.

The Wicker family plans to sue the boarding facility.

"We are going to make a change and it's going to be a good change so that this never happens again," said Heather Wicker.
