Boost Your Libido

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

By now you know working out is good for you. But if you're still looking for inspiration, Emory internist Dr. Sharon Horesh says exercise is one of the most powerful tools to jump start your libido!

"So, there have been studies that show that people who exercise have more sex. And there's a lot that's tied into that. It's really liking the image of yourself naked. It's having the self esteem. It's de-stressing. So your mind can actually focus on other things," said Dr. Horesh.

For men, losing belly fat can boost testosterone. But women can benefit in the bedroom, too.

Because Horesh says working out causes a spike in a molecule the body produces called nitric oxide.

"You can think of nitric oxide as nature's Viagra, because the way nitric oxide works, it's a vasodilator. It's helping you open up your blood vessels to maximize how much blood flow you can get."

Certain foods can boost nitric oxide levels, too. Horesh says go to your grocery store, and start in the produce aisle.

"Because what you need are a lot of fruits and vegetables. You want to target 2-3 servings of vegetables, and 3-4 servings of fruit a day," said Horesh.

Here's a catch - comfort foods - high in sugar and fat - can reduce nitric oxide levels,

"So it's just as important to avoid the cookies, the ice cream and the cake for your sexual health as it is to have the foods that enhance your sexual health."

Dr. Horesh says anything that boosts circulation - and reduces inflammation, can boost your sex-drive - because blood flow and sexual function closely connected.

She recommends 3 to 5 servings a week of anti-inflammatory foods, like salmon, nuts, flax seed,

"I think what you eat, and your lifestyle, can make a dramatic difference in your circulation overall."

Simple rule of thumb: if it's good for you heart, it's good for your love life.

"So heart-healthy is sexy," said Horesh.

The doctor adds if you’re not sure what you should be eating, the Mediterranean Diet is a good guide to get you started. It focuses on heart healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil.
