One veteran helping another veteran to keep his house in Livingston County

Posted: Updated:
Ross Dahlberg is turning 82 years old next week and is on the brink of being homeless. His Pickney home in Livingston County is in foreclosure.

The Korean War era veteran with a myriad of medical issues, including being wheelchair bound, says it all came to a head when his wife recently divorced him.

Dahlberg has lived in his house for 17 years. He fell on hard times and says he tried working with his mortgage company for months. When that failed he applied for a program with the state designed with people in his same predicament, but that didn't work either..

Joshua Parish of Livingston County's Department of Veteran Affairs is acting as a representative for Dahlberg, who has been in and out of the hospital. He claims Dahlberg was initially approved for the Step Forward Michigan Program that would have given him the $4,000 to pay off his mortgage debt. But in the final moments, Dahlberg was denied.

The state tells Fox 2 Dahlberg turned in his completed application too late. Dahlberg claims no one contacted him about a clerical issue until the day before his house was to be sold at sheriff auction. It was too late, the house was sold at the auction.

All hope isn't lost. Dahlberg has a 6-month redemption period where he has to come up with the $132,000 his house sold for in the auction.

Left with a perfect storm of problems and no solutions, Parish decided to start a GoFundMe account. He hopes people will show their honor by donating what they can to help this veteran get his house back by the September deadline.
