PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A nightmare for some people in the valley: they drop off tapes, full of lifetime memories, to be converted to DVDs, but when they go to pick them up, this is what they find: a closed sign.

Multiple customers have told FOX 10 their phone calls and e-mails are not being returned and the business' phone line has been turned off.  And they don't know what has happened to their old videotapes.

"I just want my memories back. I want the tapes back of my kids."

Kimberly Geyer has been waiting for her tapes since March.  She dropped off 31 Hi8 tapes to King Tapes in Mesa to have them converted to DVDs.

"They told me that they were running behind and so that they would take a long time. So I gave them grace.  I gave them weeks and weeks before I started calling to check on them and then I just wasn't getting through," she said.

Geyer is one of many customers who used a Groupon at the business which has been operating near Main Street in downtown Mesa for decades.  But now King Tapes' phone has been temporarily disconnected.

"Not a word.  Not an e-mail, not a phone call, nothing," said Geyer.

When we went by the store, it was locked up.  A notice from the city of Mesa utilities was on the door.

Another customer sent us a photo of a letter posted on the business as recently as last week.  The owner writes he's been dealing with a death in the family.

Customers wrote on the letter asking for their tapes back.

We also went by the owner's home.  No answer there either.

Geyer paid more than $150 to have her tapes converted.  At this point, she says it's not about money.

"It is tapes of my children, of my father-in-law who has passed away, it is tapes of family vacations.  They are irreplaceable," she said.
