Kitten Thieves Caught In The Act In Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -

Police have arrested three people accused of stealing some kittens.

Still, the question remains... Why?

Fox 29's Sabina Kuriakose spoke with the shelter director, who has her theories about the real-life cat burglars.

It was a hairy few minutes for this little guy and his sister when cat-nappers tried to steal them but now he's safe and sound and has a story to tell.

"Who would be so foolish as to walk into a shelter and walk off with two kittens? In my opinion I think that's pretty low." Said Piper Burrows, executive director of SAVE.

Workers and volunteers here at save animal shelter in Princeton are still shaken up after police say three 19-year-old men attempted to steal three-month-old Casino and his sister Penny last Saturday afternoon.

"Came into the shelter wanting to adopt kittens they even went as far as asking for adoption applications," recalled Burrows.

Instead save director Piper Burrows says two of the teens Hazma Cheema and John Moore took off with the cats while alleged accomplice Corey Thompson waited in in a getaway car. The cat burglars almost got away.

A volunteer noticed one of the guys running out the back door and he nailed him down and said give back that kitten I think he frightened the young man and he handed over the kitten.

Soon police arrived and arrested all three men. They face charges ranging from burglary and theft to conspiracy. The only motive the shelter can think of?

One of them waited to give one if the kittens to his girlfriend.

We spoke with Corey Thompson's older brother at their Plainsboro home. He says his brother would never harm or steal an animal.

"He's mature and responsible I can't see him being involved in that of they asked him to pick them up or drop them there to take the kittens without his knowledge that probably what happened," said Aaron Thompson, "we have a cat of our own so I can't see him helping them take two kittens without knowing what to do with them."

"I guess I'm just shocked people would come to our shelter and commit such a crime. We are a struggling nonprofit we are completely dependent on donations and adoption fees to stay afloat," Burrows said.

Adoption fees at the shelter are about 3 hundred dollars. One of the cat napped kitties, Penny has since been adopted.
