ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

When most people hear the name Devin Gardner, they think of him only as the quarterback at the University of Michigan. For the family of Josh Oleksiak of Chesterfield Township, Gardner means so much more.

Josh, 17, is battling stage four melanoma which started as a mole on his head and quickly spread throughout his body. Last fall, he found a friend in Gardner who has since lifted his spirits by bringing him Michigan swag during visits to the hospital and taking the time to come to one of his baseball games.

"I like to see other people smile," Gardner says. "What people don't know is he's more of an inspiration to me."

"The smile that Devin has put on my son's face, nothing can compare to that," says Jen Oleksiak, Josh's mother. "For him to do what he has done, to be the type of figure that he is at this major university, for all the trials and triumphs that he has had during his career here at UM, for him to do what he has done for my kid -- it's awesome."
