GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Travel through the Gary, Ind. on Monday will be severely restricted during the funeral for slain Gary police officer Jeffrey Westerfield, and drivers should expect long delays, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

The Gary Public Transportation Corp. announced that its routes 6, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 22 and 23 will transfer at Methodist Northlake Hospital on 6th Avenue and Grant Street. Routes 12 and 23 will only travel as far east as Grant Street through 4 p.m., and starting about 1 p.m., routes 6, 17, 18 and 19 will detour from Broadway at 8th Avenue before the funeral processional.

Route 13 will use 8th Avenue between Connecticut and Grant streets before the funeral processional, and during the processional, routes 6, 13 and 21 will be suspended until Broadway is clear at their cross-streets.

Northbound Routes 17/18 will be delayed but will remain on Broadway unless congestion requires detouring to Mississippi, Virginia or Georgia streets; during the funeral processional, southound 17/18 will use Madison, Harrison and Merrillville Road.

The Indiana Department of Transportation has also issued restrictions around the Genesis Center, where the funeral services are set to take place.

Between 6:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., U.S. 12 and 20 going east (5th Avenue) will have one lane of traffic opened between Madison and Broadway, while U.S. 12 and 20 going west (4th Avenue) will have one lane of traffic open between Massachusetts and Madison, INDOT announced. Only one northbound lane of traffic will be open on Broadway between 4th and 5th avenues.

Starting at 11:15 a.m., INDOT will close the Toll Road and Interstate 80/94 exits to Broadway until approximately 1:30 p.m.
