Jersey City police officer shot and killed

Posted: Updated:

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - The man who is accused of shooting and killing a rookie Jersey City officer who was responding to an armed robbery call never tried to rob the drugstore and instead lay in wait for police to arrive, according to investigators.

Lawrence Campbell reportedly told a witness before he shot Officer Melvin Santiago, 23, to watch the news because he was "going to be famous."

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement that Officer Santiago was shot in the head while still in his police car as he and his partner responded to a call at a Walgreens store on Kennedy Blvd. at about 4 a.m. Sunday. Fulop says Santiago was later pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center.

On Monday, police arrested Daniel Wilson in connection with another murder that Campbell is also wanted in as a suspect.  Details about that crime have been not been made public.

Fulop says officers responding to the robbery call shot and killed the man who shot Santiago.

The mayor says an armed security guard at the pharmacy told authorities the man struck him and took his weapon. Fulop says police believe that weapon was used in the shooting.

Fulop called the incident a "horrible day for Jersey City" and a "tragic situation."

Family and friends say Melvin Santiago had dreamed of being a police officer since he was a boy, seeking to follow in his uncle's footsteps.

When Santiago accomplished his dream last December and joined the Jersey City force as a rookie officer, he asked to serve in the city's toughest district.
